Hi,  yesterday morning around 10 am there were literally hundreds of worms on pavements on the 400 metre route to my newsagent. They were 50-60 mm long and no more than 1 mm dia, I assume they were new born, but not sure. Maybe 70% were dead, the rest were moving very feebly. This morning there were no worms on the pavements at all.

Very disappointed that nobody interested in this - some organisms and species breed at the very identical time / moon phase each year - was this a one off?

Water brings worms to the surface : they can't breath underwater. (recent heavy rainfall ?)

[The use of water is banned in worm charming  :)

Allegedly vibrations will bring them to the surface ... http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/125405.php
(recent roadwork jackhammer ?, earth tremor ?).

The first thing that popped into my head was frac, the process used to fracture the earth to release natural gas.  Seems logical that worms could be chased out and/or killed by either the vibration or the release of gasses.  Is gas produced in your area?
