If you save an identical named file on your computer, your computer will mention a warning yes?

Why Doesn't Google Docs do this ?

I often upload updated versions of a file and it just saves it as another version !!

how come ?

I think I know the answer ie..it's a file location thing ? maybe ?

whajafink ?

That's strange. In order to investigate this in more detail, I will need to access your files.

Please send me your password in a secure brown paper bag, and I'll see what I can do.

You're right, my file "DDD.zip" appears twice in Google Docs ...

Google's own (internal) name for files could include the upload date & time, (which do appear in Google Docs),
thus allowing apparently identically named files to be differentiated.

... I will need to access your files ... Please send me your password

You don’t need a password if someone hasn’t made their files in Google Docs private: they can be Google-able ...

Google uses a hash to make an identifier for the file, and only if the file names and the hash are identical, does the file get overwritten ( or not stored, as they are identical anyway). Google does this on a large scale to remove duplicated files, as they are stored as a single copy, and are referred to by multiple other locations. This reduces the storage a lot, as the metadata needed to reference is required to allow users to access their files only. Thus you can have multiple files with the same name but different content, and have them separate.
