I would have expected cables to broken by the the recent earthquake, what route do they take from Japan to Europe

Undersea cables are very resilient and, in any case, there are probably multiple routes. There is also the alternative route of satellite communications, not favoured so much for voice communication because of the delay, but with quite a large capacity.

It does seem that the bulk of the cabling to Europe goes via the USA, so across the pacific though. And, with an earthquake of this magnitude, the cables may well get broken.

The most vulnerable conditions for undersea cables is on the continental shelves, where they are constructed to be a lot stronger and thicker, and where they come on shore. The rest of the cable is just subjected to high pressure and little else, and is free to move around on the sea bottom as it is merely laid on top of the sediment. In an earthquake the cable is free to move and has enough resilience to absorb most of the shocks. The ends near the shore are generally buried to protect them from nets and anchors, so are less free to move. The shore stations are the ones most at risk from the sea action and waves, so have to have the best protection. Most of the times there are multiple routes and cables, to take care of what occurs often with breaking cables.
