I know it is a central stimulant, and I believe it mimics the effects of epinephrine. On a more personal experience note, during extended aerobic activity it can make you think that you're ok, when in fact you have depleted your glucose stores. Caffein definitely affects heart rate. being a deivative of 1,3,7 trimethyl xantine, it has similar stimulant effect on the CNS as adrenalin does. it is the side effect that some people usually prefer like the wakefulness and alertness that comes with it
