Kevin Reynolds  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris,

Could you please let me know what advances have been made in the treatment of MS and if (in your opinion) they will find a cure in the near future ?

Best Regards

There are MS-like conditions, some of which are readily treatable, e.g. Hughes syndrome.

If you've had an MS diagnosis make sure your doctor has explored the possibility of it actually being a more treatable MS "mimic".

(MS is a "diagnosis of exclusion")

Wot he says!

MS is caused by the Immune System attacking the sheath that covers the nerves leaving them exposed. The result is a nerve die-off. What is not clearly understood is why it attacks some nerves and not others. To date there is no cure.
