Is this medallion ancient?
« on: 24/04/2011 00:47:30 »
This medallion intrigues me, I found it in my grandmother's glass cabinet. It's about 3 1/2 cm in diameter. I don't know if it is gold or brass either. Both sides have the Parthenon on it, but one side is looking at the Parthenon from a distance from another building.

The pictures are to big to upload. but i have a link for photobucket:

Can fit if resized ...

I wouldn't order the Ferrari yet if I were you: it looks like a touristy gewgaw to me.

You could try showing the photos to ancient greek coin experts*, but don't be surprised if they laugh.

[* the coin experts arenít necessary ancient or Greek  :) ]

Remember, how we view the Parthenon, and how the Ancient Greeks viewed the monument 2000 years ago has changed.

So, if you have a coin that displays monuments as ruins, it is likely a modern rendition.  Wear patterns don't make the irregular boundaries on the monument.

I.E.  The US Penny doesn't display the Lincoln Memorial as 2000 yr old ruins.

There are many Ancient Roman coins available, and I presume Greek coins too.  Most are very well worn, and have little intrinsic value.
