Pinchas Goldberg  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi

Please can you also explain why people jolt (feel like they suddenly fall & have to catch themselves)  when lying in bed, just before they fall asleep? I do it often, and have noticed my 2 year old daughter does it as well?

Thank you again for such interesting shows.

I look forward to hearing from you.

From Johannesburg

Yours
Pinchas Goldberg

What do you think?

Hypnagogic jerk, (no it's not an insult).
