East African Rift Valley..pls advise
« on: 11/05/2011 11:25:50 »
Hi - any expert Geologist care to advise which area(s) around the East African Rift Valley is likely 'shift' in the event of a earthquake or Cataclysm.

Below is imageshack link of Rift Valley in E.Africa.  Note that there are 2 parts of Rift Valley; Western & eastern.

In short: which area would be safe  ?

Pls advise...

Mave

There is no way to predict where to be. Earthquake maps of things such as the link below do exists.

http://www.gfz-potsdam.de/portal/gfz/Struktur/Departments/Department+2/sec26/projects/01_seismic_hazard_assessment/GSHAP;jsessionid=D4511D23BA5CFF982ABB3E262BED52BE

This give the probability of an earthquake happening in a specific place on earth in a 50 year period of time.

What type of cataclysm other than an earthquake are you thinking about?

Thanks for replying to my post...

Aren't the fault lines of Rift Valley more 'susceptible' during a tremor or earthquakes ?
So land in btwn the 2 fault lines can sink (as in the case of Rift Valley).
Note the fault lines shown in red colour as per attached image.

There has been over 250 quakes in the world in last 3 months, so i'm just being curious b'coz i reside inside the Rift Valley.

Thanks - Mave

Compared to other areas of the world I would not worry much. The activity and the magnitude of the earthquakes is - over a 100 year period of time - is less and not USUALLY as strong as other areas of the world.
