Iíve just been looking at the list of questions on the Life Sciences page and see several questions that have been locked recently even though they have had lots of replies and the viewing figures show that there is still a lot of interest in them. One is the question on weather engineering by somebody called woman made scientist that I made a comment on and there are two by someone called Pete Ridley about a CO2 absorption experiment and measuring CO2 in ice cores.

How can I post comments on these now that they have been locked because I want to ask some more questions about them particularly the first one. There is an article about weather engineering that a friend emailed me today that Iíd like to talk about with anyone who knows something about it. Itís at http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=20369

Geezer who locked the question about weather-engineering (can anyone do this?) said it was because the carnicom institute was getting publicity by the question but what did that have to do with closing it. Geoengineering is an important question and even the New Zealand Royal Society thinks it is worth talking about. They had a scientific conference on it in March http://www.royalsociety.org.nz/publications/policy/2011/geo-engineering-an-interactive-workshop/ so there must be questions still waiting to be answered on this. Just because the carnicom institute is also talking about it is no reason to stop. Somebody called CliffordK seems to think like I do that weather engineering and climate engineering are closely linked so why canít we continue talking about the question where it was started. I thought that was what this site was for.

Hi there Yelder; those threads were locked not because of the general topic area but because of the particular way the threads had developed.  As you say these are two important areas where discussion is important and questions should be asked and the members of the forum will attempt to answer them.

This is not the place to rehash why those threads were closed - but this is almost certainly the right place to ask new questions.

Feel free to open a new thread with a science question that you think needs to be considered for rational debate   ;D

Thank you imatfaal for trying to help me on that but I donít know what you are mean about those locked questions developing in a particular way. The weather engineering one that I put a comment onto was a reasonable question about more than just chemtrails and the Carnicom Institute. The question was What are the consequences of weather-engineering? and Woman of Science said that she wanted to know what damage weather modification would do and someone called yor_on gave a link to an article about chemtrails thinking that answered the question when it didnít.

For some reason rosy started talking about conspiracy theories yor_on then started being sarcastic about Woman made Scientist and witches and that is where I came in. Someone called BenV tried to take the discussion off chemtrails and you picked up on it but then others kept bringing it back to chemtrails. But nobody really tried to answer the question sensibly. Thatís not a good reason for locking it because the question stays without an answer.

Last year The Guardian ran a series of articles about this subject and in one it talked about The Royal Societyís interest in it. Iíve found an article on the Royal Societyís site from September 2009 called Geoengineering the climate: science, governance and uncertainty so it is being discussed by scientists seriously http://royalsociety.org/Geoengineering-the-climate/. Why couldnít the question be unlocked and sites owners just allow sensible comments onto it and block any that are not talking properly. Iíve seen other serious articles about it and want to learn more from scientists, not people like me.

Can that question be unlocked. Who do I ask.

Yelder,

Welcome to TNS!

The forum moderators will not debate the pros and cons of their actions on the forum. If you have a concern about moderator actions you can certainly contact one of the site administrators.

If you have a question regarding environmental science, this is the right place to post it.

As this topic is a question about forum moderation and not a question about The Environment, I'm moving it to the Guest Book.

Regards,
Geezer

For the most part I've found the moderation on this site to be reasonable.

Some topics do ramble a bit.  But, if a topic gets particularly "personal", then it isn't tolerated.

You are always welcome to start a new topic under a different light, as long as it isn't seen as rubbing salt in open wounds.

I donít know what is gong on here. I have a comment that is on a science question already asked by somebody else What are the consequences of weather-engineering? but canít ask it without starting a new identical question because the question has been locked and now my question has been locked and moved away from science. Itís the funniest site Iíve ever been on. Iíve looked at another locked question on the science site another hockey stick illusion and it was locked then opened again so why cant that question by woman made scientist about geoengineering be made open again so I can put my comment on it. Im not very good at this blogging so need somebody to help me. This is another comment about geoenginnering so can it go on the other site.

Iíve had a look at some  more royal society articles on geoengineering - taking control of our planet's climate: talks about spending a lot of money on research http://royalsociety.org/Geoengineering-taking-control-of-our-planets-climate/speakers/. The people talked about were professor chris freeman of bangor university and tim kruger of oxford geoengineering programme and professor david keith of calgary university and professor john latham of the national center for atmospheric research and professor brian launder of manchester university and dr margaret leinen of the climate response fund and professor damon matthews of concordia university and professor john mitchell of the met office and professor nicholas pidgeon of cardiff university and professor andy ridgwell of bristol university and professor john shepherd of southampton university and dr joy singarayer of bristol university and dr carol turley of plymouth marine laboratory and dr naomi vaughan of east anglia university and professor andrew watson of east anglia university and dr matthew watson of bristol university and professor robert watson of the department for environment food and rural affairs so there is plenty of scientific people interested in this question even if yor_on thinks its not happening.

At least these people have scientific qualifications and this question still needs to be talked about so please can somebody tell me how I can get it unlocked instead of starting a new one on the same subject.

Please just start a new topic asking a similar question.  The last one fell apart and it would be good to have a fresh start on an interesting topic.

The forum moderators will not debate the pros and cons of their actions on the forum.

The thread has been locked. As you saw, I tried very hard to keep it away from chemtrails and conspiracy theory but failed.  A new thread would allow us to discuss the actual science behind weather modification.
