Does alcohol alter metabolism?

Emilio Romero asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello Naked Scientists...

I've been meaning to ask you something for a while now:

I believe 1.5 fluid oz of scotch has about 105 calories... let's say someone watching their weight has three drinks of scotch Friday night; that will be about 315 calories... does alcohol in any way slow metabolism to the point of the body not burning the same amount of calories (while sleeping, let's make it easier) it would burn without prior alcohol consumption?

Thank you very much

Emilio Romero

What do you think?

Alcohol appears to increase metabolic rate, thus burning more calories efficiently.

I'm pretty sure it does boost your metabolism; however, the processes that take place in the body tend to prioritize metabolizing alcohol first, and the chemicals produced negatively affect the body's ability to burn fat for energy. This actually makes it *more* difficult rather than less difficult to lose weight when drinking.
