The only Russian I can think of is Gary Kasparov, who is a Chess Player.

I had thought that Garry Kasparov had played Bobby Fischer, but apparently it was Boris Spassky, eventually leading to Bobby Fischer's exile.

As far as scientists, Wikipedia seems to have many lists of Russian Scientists.

I think of Grigori Perelman. Russia have a tradition of brilliant mathematicians as I see it.

Let us not forget about --

Dmitri Mendeleev 19th century chemist who shaped the whole subject of Inorganic chemistry for the next 150 years
Lev Landau brilliant theoretical physicist of the middle of the 20th century.
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, who was the grandfather of the successful Soviet space program.
Alexandr Borodin who not only did some important organic chemistry, but also wrote some pretty good music.

There are/were, of course, many others.

I know that this is an old thread, but I could not let it pass without mentioning Alexander Friedmann.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Friedman

This is the cosmologist who did much of the early work developing the model of the Universe that seems to now be the dominant model.  (the less than descriptively named FLRW metric:

)

An interesting and important guy.

I'll add Elie Metchnikoff to the list.  Great?  Perhaps not.  A personal favourite?  Yes.
