Does exercise type affect cholesterol levels?
« on: 22/07/2011 11:07:23 »
Hi

My cholesterol is a little high so I have started cardio exercise. A friend suggested that bodybuilding would be better. Does anyone know if type of exercise makes a difference?

I like to think that cardio will exercise the heart better (clue in the name) so make me healthier.

Jonners - there are numerous very good non-governmental organisations and charities that provide info on this sort of thing (british heart foundation springs to mind).

When it comes to one health and wellbeing it is best to a) speak to your gp first b) take advice from independent and well-researched information-providers c) take all advice from mates, the internet, and newspapers with a pinch of salt.

Actually - hold the pinch of salt - excess saltintake is thought to also be a risk factor.

Yeah, been searching around and still waiting to see the gp for the follow up on the blood results.

Read some interesting things, seems cardio is possibly the better option for raising HDL but weight training shows improvements too but that may be due to lifestyle change and reduce fat levels. Will stick with mostly cardio with some weight training / kettlebells I think.

Light weights and lots of 'reps' should be the way to go if you are looking to burn off fat or lower your cholesterol.

Again, whilst reiterating what Clifford said about getting proper medical advice, I think it would be remiss of me not to add that weight training can represent a real health risk if the individual starts attempting weights far above their standard.  Even experienced lifters have been known to have heart-attacks, and not just those using steroids.

I think this is a factoid about red wine. Apparently grape juice has been shown to be just as effective!  (not that I;m not partial to the other effects of fermented grapes!).

Type of exercise matters in exercise when it comes to how much
workout of body is done by the exercise in particular time.
Some exercises give body extra work out and strain in this case
body loses the weight in faster manner.

Exercise has many healthy benefits. Not only can it keep your weight down, build up muscle, and reduce your risk of certain diseases, exercising regularly also has beneficial effects on the heart - and your cholesterol levels. Unfortunately, the mechanism is still not very clear about how exactly does exercise affect your cholesterol. Bottom point is: you'll be OK as long as you sweat and exercise! use that logic. Also try to get some newbielink:http://loweringcholesterolguide.com/ [nonactive] info and stick to it for at least a couple of weeks, then go back and check your cholesterol. With exercises or not, your main goal is to reduce cholesterol levels!
