« on: 26/04/2006 19:23:51 »

Greets Peeps of Scientific Wonder & Awe.

It’s sunny today !!..YAYYYYYY !!...and with clement weather comes the onslaught of sunglass adverts…so, how do the reactive glasses go from calm cool transparent to chic smart noir ?

Brighten up my day by explaining that one to me please[8D]

Merci

Hi Neil
Yay! a question I know the answer to- a bit[:I]
The plastics used to produce transition lenses (or photochromic ) contains millions of molecules of silver halide, this when exposed to strong UV light reactes by darkening, when the UV isn't present they go clear. They tend not to work very well behind modern car windscreens (design flaw *1 ) and also don't work as well at higher temperatures due to the nature of silver halide i beleive (design flaw *2 [}:)])
Apart from that they are great ;)
