Organic chem synthesis and lab instructions?
« on: 09/11/2011 12:09:44 »
I need to synthesis 10g of pure 3-methoxypentane, max 3 Carbons in reagents

So far I have:

CH3CH2BR ->Mg Et2O -> CH3CH2MgBr

+ CH3CH2COH = CH3CH2C(O)CH2CH3

+ I-CH3 = CH3CH2C(OCH3)CH2CH3

Weights:
Ethyl Mg Br 0.2mol = 26.7g in diethyl ether = 26.1mL?

propionaldehyde 0.2mol = 11.6g

Methyl iodide 0.2mol = 28.4g

Does that look right so far?
How do I match chemical properties with designing a lab protocol?
How do I work out what the percentage yield from each step will be so I know what weights to use at the start?
