Neil Wallace  asked the Naked Scientists:

Dear Chris,

I think most people have felt the extraordinary ability certain smells have to trigger memories, instantly evoking a specific time and place. I was just wondering if there was any established biological or evolutionary reason for the sense of smell to be so powerfully linked to former recollections?

Many thanks, Neil in Kennington.

What do you think?
