Most interesting design.

Did you know you can also form a perfect pentagram by simply tying a knot in a strip of paper?  Does it date me too much if I say that the tear-off tractor strips on fanfold paper are great for making pentagram knots?

Have you tried making it with paper?

Take a strip of paper, say 1/2" wide, and several inches long.

Loop it through and tie a knot in it.  Carefully fold it at the edges.  And you end up with a pentagram. 

Since it truly becomes a 2D structure in the end, you could probably simulate it with 2D graphics, although I suppose you wouldn't see which pieces go over which ones.

As far as your circle, I assume the sizes of the circles are critical.  A little different, and you might end up with more sides on your star.

The method you mentioned can be used to make both pentagrams and pentagons.
