The poultice will soon be upon us.

I see the winter poultice is coming up again - quite soon in fact. But it falls on a different date this year, so why does it move around?

Do you mean the Winter Solstice?

Normally it falls on December 21 (like this year).  Yet, it jumps forward to December 20th on Leap Years when an extra day is added earlier in the year.

It would be defined as the point where the angle of the earth's axis with relation to the sun makes its maximum extent, or something like that.  Anyway, the Earth's spin (creating days/nights) and the earth's revolution around the sun (creating the seasons) is not perfectly synchronized.

The Wikipedia page (linked above) has a great chart that shows the Winter solstice down to the minute, and one can see the progression year to year, through the leap years.

You might be a bit lonely if you are dancing around in your druid kit at 5:30 UTC on the 21st, cos it's 5:30 UTC on the 22nd this year (although it will still be the 21st in Oregon.)

Oh
I was reading the June Column.   [xx(]
Which would be the Winter Solstice...
If one was living in the South.

I think the winter poultice is dependant on conditions on the other side of the world. If its boiling hot you need a poultice.

If it is so hot as to be boiling under foot, the you need a solestice.

Of course it was probably the winter poultice solstice which was more important than the summer solstice. Praise, and perhaps the odd sacrifice, to the gods was more important in midwinter. You wanted the gods on your side to see you through the hard times.
