What is hand, foot and mouth disease?
« on: 01/04/2012 10:10:01 »
George Castille  asked the Naked Scientists:
   Dear Chris,

My grand-daughter recently got Hand, Foot and Mouth disease. I had never heard of it ( only of the cattle variant -not related I know) and neither had any of my friends and our children certainly didn't get it, so where has it come from? It is very contagious and nursery schools in Sandton were half empty when it was doing the rounds.

I looked it up on the internet and it says it mainly affects children under 5 but my daughter and myself got it so it affected 3 generations and I probably suffered the most.

I also read in the newspaper that there was a big outbreak in Hanoi and although described as a mild illness, children were dying of it.

Can you please discuss this on air as I was unable to get through last week.

I love your programme!

Regards,
Sandra Castille

Hand-foot-and-mouth is due to an enterovirus infection, usually Coxsackie virus A16, although it can also be due to Enterovirus 71. It is very infectious, so several members of the family or a school class may be affected.
