Juggling - I juggle like a mad thing.   My eldest brother infected the whole family with the bug.  And it really works to counteract stress and anxiety - especially learning (it creates so much "argh I am gonna do this!!!" that you don't have room for anything else.

And even now that I can four and five ball cascade and fountain, mills mess etc - it is still marvellously relaxing.  Your mind just has to be on the juggling and the manual movement is nice, rhythmic and soothing.

Klutz jugging book with the three bean bags in a bag on the cover is great.   Do not try and learn with anything other than bean bags - they are so much easier than anything else

PS Tell your partner what you are doing by the way - my sister in law returned from a weekend away to find piles of things in threes all around the house and was half convinced that my brother was having a nervous breakdown

http://www.drjoecarver.com/clients/49355/File/Emotional%20Memory.html

This above article, called Emotional Memory Management by Dr. Carver, has interesting ideas and techniques to manage anxiety, depression and other negative thought patterns. I think the author does a very good job of explaining why these techniques work from both a psychological as well as a neurological/brain physiology point of view. The article seems applicable to wide variety of conditions including anxiety, panic attacks, post traumatic stress disorder, depression, and even conflict in relationships. And he's even funny at times, too. I was very impressed.

I'm sure she will be most understanding. HOWEVER, I would suggest that you follow Imatfaal's advice and stick to bean bags. She might not be quite so accomodating if you start slinging the best bone china dinner set around.

I think that training is the best way to reduce anxiety. I think your anxiety is related with specific situations, so the first step is indentify these situations and what preceed your anxiety sensation. When you can describe these moments, you can perceive what triggers your anxiety.
One effective way of training is the mental one. You can imagine the situation ou just remember any and try to feel peaceful while you think about these memories. You can identify what do you be quiet and do this whilw you think about an anxiety situation. For example, you can stay at home, listen to music and think abou terrible things. This is a progressive training to control anxiety. This beggins with mental training and with time might be aplied to real situations.

I hope I could help you.
Please, give more details about your anxiety and I could help you better.

Cannabis.
And if you use a vaporizer to inhale it, instead of the well known joint, you'll greatly reduce (but not eliminate!) the negative side effects.

Disclaimer: Not suitable for pregnant women, and do not drive any vehicle, or operate heavy machinery will using this medicine!

Edit: Yes I am pro legalization! It's time that cannabis is regarded as a medicine with side effects instead of a drug. Alcohol is far more destructive and yet it's legal in many countries.

MODNOTE

Whilst there is vast evidence of the positive therapeutic uses of Cannabis, it is illegal in much of the world, including the UK.   Please take care to check the local, state, and national laws of where-ever you are before you promote, investigate, purchase, store, or use Cannabis.

Could we ensure that we keep any discussion theoretical, third-party, and science based.  Any personal accounts of illegal drug-taking will referred to the moderators/administrators and may be deleted.

M...  is legal for medical usage here in Oregon, as well as several states.
All you have to do is convince a doctor that you have a treatable medical condition...  I think.

There are, in fact, a number of medications classified as Anxiolytics

One other thing, if you have a tendency to get chilly with anxiety, then you may choose to dress a little more warmly than normally when you anticipate a stressful situation.

Medical terminology shows and proves that Alprazolam (Xanax) relieves anxiety quickly as well as it being short acting. It should not be used for a long period of time unless the there is an absolute need for the drug. Other than medications, other positive anxiety reducing remedies are simply wining down with some nice warm sleeping tea, taking a nice hot bath, listening to some peaceful music and reading before bed. These all have been proven to reduce the sensations of anxiety and to help prevent a panic attack from occurring. Talking to someone that you trust helps dramatically and it's perfectly fine to let all of you're emotions out, within minutes you will feel like a new person, ready to take on anything. One must face the reality of being overwhelmed with something, whatever it can be, triggering neurons into override causing sensations such as anxiousness, nervousness, fidgeting, not knowing what to do, heart racing and many more symptoms can occur. Another way to reduce anxiety is to understand the root causes of it and to sense anxiety in the rise beforehand. This will help you be able to control the sensations better in whatever situations you encounter, if it's a new position to buying a car, home or most commonly personal and family issues that trigger anxiety. Read as much as you can! Stay in touch with your doctor and don't be afraid to admit your problems. Don't forget about meditation, as this helps dramatically. Also, you should focus on hypnosis music which can be equivalent to a three hour nap in a matter a ten minutes and it really does reduce the anxiety one encounters throughout the day. One must also realize there can be an underlying cause to the sensations of anxiety and should be checked by a mental health professional to make sure this problem will not be continuous. Substance abuse such as alcohol and simply taking pain medications can trigger anxiety when seized abruptly. Like I said, It's either simple techniques, remedies, medications and the knowledge of how anxiety works that helps eliminate and stop it at its source. I hope this was some help ;)

I'm not really pro or anti drug legal or otherwise, but there hasnt been much success treating anxiety with any substance, as there arguably has been in the treatment depression. When valium was introduced they claimed it was safe and effective and non-addictive, which turned out not to be true at all. Most anti-anxiety medications cause dependancy, withdrawal and leave patients worse off than before. I'd even question the use of cannabis, which although less destructive than alcohol, causes feelings of paranoia at least in some individuals.
