How do these things produce anti-matter?

Antiprotons

Fermilab creates antiprotons by striking a nickel target with protons. It takes 100,000 to a million protons to make an antiproton.

They are collected and stored in a storage ring until recently they have been used in colliding beam accelerators.  because they are precisely the opposite of protons an acelerator that works for protons in one direction will acelerate antiprotons in the other.  with careful design it is possible to keep thev protons and aniprotons away from each other except for certain precise spots in the circulating beam and generate extremely high energy head on collisions between protons and antiprotons.

That's OK for research into High energy processes but to understand the properties of low energy antimatter it is necessary to slow them down and cool them in a very high vacuum they can then add positrons  (anti electrons) and allow them to form thrue antiatoms of hydrogen to check that the chemical propertied are also identical to normal hydrogen.

Thank you, Ian.

If a rock isn't involved, I am out of my depth. And if I can't look the formula up in a book - well shoot me.

so you can make Identical atoms out of the Anti forms?  Until now, I only knew of the Positrons.  Would an atom made of antimatter still explode when touching an identical atom of normal matter?

btw, they say Enstien discovered the nuclear bomb on accident in his lab, then why isnt he dead?  for it to be safe, it would have to be in a controlled environment, and you dont generally have that in an accidental discovery.

E=MC2... m=deg/360 X C... C= PiD

therefore E=deg/360 X 2(PiD)

What I would imagine would happen is that the electron and positrons on the outside of the atoms would first annihilate each other, throwing the nucleus of the residual atoms/anti-atoms out at high velocity, which would then hit the nucleus of its opposite number, and then annihilate that.

Einstein did not discover the nuclear bomb.  In fact, the nuclear bomb was never discovered, it was invented.

What Einstein did was realise that the loss of mass that was involved in the fission of a uranium atom must represent a massive amount of energy that was being released, and then, with others, came to realise that this could be a principle that could be used to develop a massive bomb.  He then put a lot of effort into convincing the US government to put the resources necessary into developing such a powerful bomb before the Germans did so.

Is it true that there's no such thing as 'matter'? isn't a quark, after all, just pure energy?

Relativity tells us that matter and energy are the same thing.  That the two things are one and the same does not mean that either of them does not exist, but merely tells us that if one exists, so must the other, for they are both the same.

Never a need to apologise for not knowing.  We all start out by not knowing, the only sin is in not seeking to find out that which we do not know.

And George used the word SIN too.

Maybe we should work on haveing Liquid Anti-Nitrogen as extremely effeciant fuel source.
