masterly question
« on: 17/05/2012 09:10:14 »
Hi all, with so much knowledge currently out there is it better to be a jack of all trades master of none or an expert in one field of study.

It's probably good to be an expert in at least one field AND have a broad knowledge of lots of other subjects, but it's really going to depend very much on the individual.

I totally agree with Geezer.

This answer may not contribute much but I guess if there is only one reply you may not weigh it very highly.

I think some generalism is good.
And, if you specialize in TWO fields, then you would always have something to fall back on if one doesn't work out, or you have a change of heart.

If one specializes in a field such as computer science, one is often talking to individuals in other fields such as business, engineering, or whatever, depending on what one ends up doing.  So, there is always benefits of sharing some common knowledge.

A manager may manage multiple groups of people, so a broad background may be quite useful if you are planning to "climb the ladder".

It also seems as if I find myself deriving ideas from multiple disciplines.
