Most of us can not lipread.  Or at least we don't think we can.

So, why is a delay between video and audio in a film so annoying?

In fact, it seems to be worse to have a delay of ˝ second or so than having a film that is dubbed.

The visual information my be redundant, but we seem to process it anyway. If it's inconsistent with the audible information, our brains complain!

I don't think it makes much difference which is lagging - it's just the fact that it's inconsistent.

Our brains unconsciously know that light is faster than sound. So our brains are moderately tolerant of sound lagging behind the picture (up to 45ms), but are less tolerant of the sound arriving before the picture (15ms).
