John Gamel asked the Naked Scientists:

I've heard that in order to maintain a rechargeable battery it's best to occasionally let it run flat and then give it a good re-charge. On the other hand, it's supposed to be bad if you just leave it fully charged all the time.

Is this true? And is it true that regular batteries maintain their shelf life longer if you keep them in the refrigerator?

Thanks again for your help with the little problems of life. BTW, I always listen to every one of your shows, but I do it on my I-pod, so it may not come until months later.

There is no universal rule because it depends on the type of battery in question, and, to some extent, the manufacturer.  Here's a link to a commercial site that lists the recommendations of various manufacturers by battery type.

I thought so too. I only stumbled upon it because of this question! Apparently it was also unknown to the chap in California who parked his Tesla for several months and let the batteries go completely flat.
