As ewe or may or not know I do not drink alcy........so, as a firm believer in empirical study I can not even try this one for myself.

Here's the Alcy stuff for ewe to peruse at:

A piccy of alcy stuff that ewe just looked at a moment  ago.

It has been reported that Alcohol tastes sweeter in a noisy environment !!

Two kweschuns if I may .

Why does alcy taste sweeter in a noisy environment ?

What circumstances led to doing a study to find this out ?

If ewe can maintain your sobriety and assist me in this regard I would be most grateful.. though...according to my kweschun HERE perhaps some alcy will aid the answer !

Why does alcy taste sweeter in a noisy environment ?

NHS is not convinced that's the reason people drink like a fish in noisy clubs...

What circumstances led to doing a study to find this out ?

The ease of finding student volunteers for this free-booze experiment :)

Thanks RD !

I noted this from the article :

Quote
This was a small experimental study, carried out over 45 minutes. It used a specific population – young and mainly female – and one specific type of drink – cranberry juice and vodka – and took place in laboratory conditions rather than in the ‘real world’. Given these limitations, its findings are of minor interest and should be viewed with caution.

And then further n...my original second question is answered here:

Quote
What kind of research was this?

This was an experimental laboratory study looking at whether certain background ‘distractions‘ – including club music – could alter people’s taste perceptions of alcohol. It also examined whether these distractions affected people’s ability to estimate the strength of alcoholic drinks.

Cheers !!!

Maybe it's a learned Pavlovian response?
Stimulus: Hear loud music -> Response: Eat lots of salty snacks and drink lots of alcohol

..or maybe a Darwinian selection process?
a) "I should be the Alpha male (or female) because I can shout (or scream) over the noise, and drink more than you before I end up under the table."
b) "I am a really fit mate because I can afford to buy really expensive and colourful drinks in ornate bottles, and frequent exclusive establishments that play loud music."

...or a counter-Darwinian mating strategy: "If he/she is drunk, and can't hear anything I say because of the noise, they may not notice how unfit I am, and maybe they will have sex with me?"

...or maybe a misunderstanding about the diuretic effects of alcohol?
Hot room & dancing -> get thirsty -> drink alcohol -> urinate -> get more thirsty -> drink more alcohol -> (potential infinite loop)

...and what about a way to access my Jungian Shadow:
"If I get drunk listening to innovative music, I will free myself to be at my most sparkling and creative...(and hopefully won't get injured in a bar-room brawl...)"

or a temporary form of Freudian Repression:
"If I bombard myself with loud music and drink lots of alcohol, I will forget all about where my life is going..."

Perhaps the bartender doesn't want to listen to your life history?
