Fingernail biting/chewing
« on: 11/06/2006 12:19:20 »
Jason chews his fingers and finernails. He thinks he can't stop. He's tried many deterrents like chili powder and fingernail polish but nothing works. He also likes to pick at things; scabs, blemishes etc. Is there a condition where people can't stop chewing and picking or is it just a bad habit?

Wikipedia has a page on onychophagia:-

Here is a page on dermatotillomania:-
" Psychogenic excoriation (also called neurotic excoriation, acne excoriee, pathological or compulsive skin picking, and dermatotillomania) is characterised by excessive scratching or picking of normal skin or skin with minor surface irregularities. It is estimated to occur in 2% of dermatology clinic patients and is associated with functional impairment, medical complications (e.g. infection) or substantial distress. "

well this "condition" is also just a bad habit. please dont put your friend on antidepressants AND antipsychotics like these quack doctors are doing just because he chews and picks. it just needs alot of self control. maybe he should take up smoking.
