With the precision design of superalloy materials we are able to manufacture materials that can cope with most of the stresses and strains of everyday life inside a jet engine.  But there is an extra step we can take to really make the most of these materials and protect them from harm.  In these two short articles, Cathie Rae & Bill Clegg explain how applying different coatings to the turbine blades found in jet engines can help to protect the material and make the engine more efficient...
