I think calculating them is used as a performance indicator (benchmark) for your computer, like the 0-60mph time for a car :)

I think Mandelbrot displays are the best test of computing power I remember using them on a Mac about twenty years ago but cannot find one for my PC.

I seem to remember you use them in the taylor series for the tangent of an angle.
