Are humans primates?
« on: 27/11/2012 05:24:10 »
I've sometimes heard humans referred to as "primates". To me the term "primate" means something like "top relative". This would cover the other great apes, chimps, bonobos, gorillas, orangutangs, ect.  As people are not normally considered "related" to themselves then calling humans "primates" seems misleading.

Primates just means those at the top, and we are primates. Conceited, but linguistically consistent.

Wikipedia, of course, has an article on Primates

Quote
A primate is a mammal of the order Primates (Latin: "prime, first rank"),  which contains prosimians and simians.

By defining it as an "order" as a biological classification, all members of the order would be considered primates, and thus humans would be of:

Class:    Mammalia
Order:    Primates
Family:    Hominidae
Tribe:    Hominini
Genus:    Homo
Species:    Homo sapiens

And, of course, there is also a Wikipedia list of primates, which Humans seem to fall at the bottom of the list.

If Wiki's list of primates was in order of increasing cuteness these might come last.

Though some humans would think baby humans win the contest.
As far as I can tell, there's no particular reason why we come bottom of the list on Wiki.

Guess it's like the "strike" in baseball. The verb "strike" means to hit, yet it's called a "strike" if the batter FAILS to hit the ball.
