How does a bagless vacuum cleaner work?

How does a cylindrical bagless vacuum cleaner work ? one advantage and one disadvantage of using a bagless vacuum clearner.

If you go to council recycling depot you will see lots of bagless vacuum cleaners that have been dumped it would seem that they either have a short life or their buyers are just dissatisfied with them.
The answer would seem to be that they don't

Most use the principle of cyclonic separation, where a miniature spinning tornado separates dust from the air, requiring little or no filtration. Because a vortex of a certain size is best at removing dust down to a certain size, sometimes multiple stages of vortex are used to remove a wider range of dust particle sizes.
