What happened at the Dyatlov Pass incident?
« on: 08/04/2013 17:30:02 »
N Apro  asked the Naked Scientists:

I would love to hear your thoughts about the Dyatlov pass incident (when a group died under unusual circumstances) that happened in the former Soviet Union. I have recently come to know about it and would love to know what could have caused it all.

Thank you for your answer in advance

Love the show

My best regards,

What do you think?

A thought from left field --

has the possibility of mouldy rye bread and ergotism been seriously considered?

Wikipedia has a good write up of the incident.

Hypothermia has been associated with disorientation and disrobing, which may have affected some of the hikers.  However, it sounds like they were partially clothed at the time they left their tent.  Perhaps they were hit by a small avalanche, or the waning moments of a blizzard and show drifts, and judged that they were better off heading for the trees, firewood, and natural shelter rather than digging out their belongings.  However, in retrospect, it would have seemed like an unwise decision to leave their boots at the campsite.

There is a lot of talk about seeing footprints, but it is possible that some snow shifted off of the tent between the occurrence, and the discovery, or at least it seemed worse to the occupants at the time (likely at night).
