Oddly, of US Presidents, only about 5 (out of 44) of them had beards, and less than half sported any facial hair.

None of the sported a toothbrush mustache.

Perhaps facial hair and politics don't mix.

In the survey, did they rank the mate quality of men sporting the famous toothbrush mustaches?

Allegedly beards make people appear untrustworthy because you can't read their facial expression as when clean-shaven ...

Ok,
So the toothbrush may be a bit of a social faux pas.  It is amazing how a single person can have such an influence over global grooming.

Perhaps the Sasquatch Look is better  [|)]

Anyway, I wonder how much of this is innate, and how much is transient.  Undoubtedly a century or two ago, the stubble look was common as people might get a shave at the barber once every week or two.  It may have disappeared to some extent with the disposable razors & razor blades.  Then has become more popular again in the recent media.

Of course each social group is likely different too some preferring full beards.

And, of course, some races have very little facial hair.  Do they perceive beards & stubble differently?

The article is from Australia ...

And the beard examples shown are that of a Caucasian ...

The heavy-stubble is in the goldilocks-zone:
above "light stubble" which is sufficiently-hairy-to-be-male-and-fertile* ,
and below "full beard" aka hairy-as-an-old-vagrant (who would not make a good provider).

Whether or not a beard is an improvement can be man-specific ...
