I have little to add to to this discussion besides the obvious - yes it does imply a pH of 7 - but whether that is in actuality what is ment is beyond my limited knowledge of surfactants.

I need to admit to the fact that squalor, pestulence and dirt seem to follow me around like "Pigpen" in the Penuts cartoon, so I cannot set myself up as an authority on cleanliness.

I can gather that if your hands get rough, red snd chafed, Neil, then you need to look to the soap.

Sir,

I remain in your debt, though your comment may prevail upon this forum a veil of inadequate acquaintance with the subject...it does go some way to demonstrate the necessity for cleanliness in an unclean world.

Though, we may deduce from your inference that your humble abode be akin to a quagmire of septic tank constitutions, it is with a smile and a skip that your comments here are welcomed with open arms, some antispetic cream and a turkish massage.

The normal pH of human skin is slightly acidic, (not neutral, pH 7):-

" The human skin and hair have a pH between 5 and 6, which means that they are slightly acidic.
This is due to a complex mixture of natural chemicals covering the skin that have the ability to
neutralize bases. This acidic environment helps to prevent the growth of bacteria and also
protects against substances with a high pH. It has been shown that soaps and cleansers of high
pH (basic) can be very irritating to the skin and can temporarily remove this acid barrier.
This is why shampoos, lotions, creams, and most soaps
have a pH adjusted to the pH of the skin, 5-6. In general, products with pHs above 8 may be
irritating to the skin."
