Why does adhesive tape glow when separated?
« on: 01/08/2013 22:30:02 »
Philip Thomas  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris & the team,

I snore, so to give my wife a rest at night, I use the leading brand of stick on nasal strips to open my passages and reduce the snoring.

One night, she turned of the light before I had opened the paper wrapper on the strip, so I opened it in the dark. What happened surprised me, for as I pulled the pack apart (as one opens a plaster) the adhesive lit up brightly. Can you tell me what is going on? try it yourselves to see what I mean.
Regards,

Phil Thomas

ps love the whole range of shows that you all do, so informative!

What do you think?

Triboluminescence occurs in the sticky tape when the glue is pulled away from the underlying tape layer.  The molecules stretch out, separating electrical charges in the adhesive.  As they are pulled further apart the voltage between the charges increases to the point where it overcomes the natural resistance of the material and discharges, producing a miniature lightning bolt.  This is what produces the visible light.

Unrolling sticky tape actually can produce X-Rays, which can be used to take an X-Ray of your finger.

You just need to ensure that the tape does not self-discharge through the air before the separated electrons can reach energy levels in the X-Ray region; they do this by having a machine unroll the sticky tape in a vacuum.
