What causes vertigo?

Brian Beck  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hey guys! Great show. I work ten to twelve hours a day in a factory, and love listening to your podcasts while I'm working! Anyway, I have a question.

Since the age of eighteen, I have dealt with vertigo at least once a year, sometimes two or three times. The only thing a doc has ever done is to prescribe Antivert, basically a motion sickness med. What's the deal? What's going on with me? If it is an inner ear infection why wouldn't an antibiotic clear it up? Anything I can do?

Thank you very much!

Brian in Cleveland, Ohio USA
