Refraction

Is it impossible for a material (or metamaterial) to have different indecies of refraction along the same axis, but depending on the direction of travel? (ie. light propogates faster in the x direction than it does in -x direction)

Calcite crystals exhibit a different index of refraction depending on the polarisation of the light striking it.
