My daughter and her choice of feet !!
« on: 06/08/2006 22:21:49 »
hello..how are you ?...
I'm fine thanks !...excellent...gflad we got the small talk over !!

When my daughter (4) asks me if she has put her shoes on the correct way...9 times out of 10, she has them on the wrong feet !!

This is too common a circumstance to be random.

Has she learned to put them on the wrong feet [?] ...if so...where did this knowledge come from [?]...if she has learned it, then why does she ask if she has them on correctly [?]...is it some form of subconsious learning [?]...does she instinctively have a natural proclivity to favour the shoes on the wrong way round [?]

whajafink [?]

Shobedoobedoo doo wap wap yeah !!!

Sounds to me like attention seeking behaviour she wants you to tell her they are the wrong way around.

Next time she puts them on the wrong way around, and asks you if they are right if you tell her they are correct, see how long it takes her to tell you that you are wrong.

Hey Neil, Thats a good stategy, that George is trying out, and I have used and it does not always work as I have found out.:D But I see many children this age do this, It is entirely age approprate and I am not certain she does know they are wrong at this time! This is something I have studied in school! I had to learn about develoment of a childs mind and the processes of their learning. Quite interesting but really cool. Allows much more patience once you know all steps involved at learning at this age!;) She does know however that she trusts her daddy to show her the correct way and this takes many times to have it placed to memory, and she will continue to do it untill she has stored and processed all of the details. She has learned to put them on her feet, now she must change that in her memory to not only include putting them on , but know she has to branch out in her mind and look closely at the shoe to see which way the toes point, and learn to add that to the equation. This may take months to learn just as a child learns that if he drops his spoon the effect will be that Daddy or Mommy will pick it up, then this becomes a game so that the child is repeating it. When she has processed this information and put it to permanant memory, she will move on to the next part of the process. You need to work on direction of toes now untill she has put it to permanant memory, she will stop asking you when she finally really gets it! She needs to know you will be honest and show her the right method untill she gets it. It will come!;) I still have some 5 year olds who get them on backwards!!!;)

It does not seem reasonable to say that she does not know right from wrong if she gets it wrong more often then right one would expect a 50/50 likelihood if she really did not know.

Then again what is her idea of right or wrong?  Why is one right and the other wrong?  Is right that which gets you the most attention?  Is there any other way she would have of defining right and wrong?

As Karen said, she'll probably get bored of the game sometime.

pretty normal for children neilsy..my middle son would wear his that way and run out the door so he could play and I would have to correct him...he would tell me all the time, he didn't have time???  what in the world does a child know about time at that age???

THANK YOU ALL for your wonderful comments.

What is bothering me now is why did I miss the point that George said that it's attention seeking ?....She is one little attention seeker queen !!
Could it be that I missed it so blatantly because I'm emotionally involved ?..I am astonished that after all this time the penny did not drop with my own child !!

Karen...your post is filled with fantastic information...regarding the throwing items on the floor , James (1 on the 8th) is the KING of this...he has us well trained in this...it's all he does !!..really frustrating when eating at the table...as regular as my bowels are after a high fibre lunch he just keeps on throwing stuff down !!...any tips on how to combat this would be soooooooooooooooo welcome...

..you'd think with four kids we'd have all the answers...oh no !!!

Halo !!...sorry..I mean Hey Lo !! (you're no angel .......YES you are !!):)...you're so right....what's a child to know about right and wrong at that age ?...actually, I think quite a lot and also not a lot !!....there...how ambiguous is that ? :D....

He likes the cause and effect of this action, I throw it down daddy picks it up' Its a learning game, but also a teaching game. You must now teach him a new effect! don't pick it up! He may be telling you he is done eating and wants to play. try something new, clear his place, he is showing you he is done, or don't pick it up,the spoon. See what happens when you do this! He will quickly discover that meal time is for eating. It won't hurt him but he might get mad the first few times, but be consistant with whatever you try!Don't do it once and give up! They love to throw food at this age! Redirect him to a new activity as he is playing with the food. natural for them to want to touch it explore it with their fingers their mouth their face their feet, wherever they can however they can. Its all about learning!

NEIL,...At his age it is really good for him to explore his food with his hands, that starts about 6 months until about two or sosome longer ie; Me. It teaches them about food, textures, shapes, and cause and effect! If I squeeze these mashed potato's with my hands what will happen! What does it feel like on my face in between my fingers etc: Lots of sensory building skills and fine motor control happening right now, Such a really cool age for sure. He is not doing it to drive you crazy, he's doing it because he is learning! Smelling touching tasting, feeling, Building a whole new sensory experience, It's great for him and you.

Start giving him lots of safe textured items! Things he can put in his mouth and explore. Get him some good sturdy mouth proof books, as he is also building his literacy skills right now believe it or not! Learning to turn pages and feel how a book works. Let him put it in his mouth and handle it. He will learn how to handle and manipulate the pages, A texture book would be great at this age!

Hop to young man, you have a budding scientist on your hands!!!

I know you already do most of this, but make sure when he is bored or has accomplished one skill, that you step it up a notch so he can move on and build new skills.

You should try this one sometime! Buy 15 or 20 boxes of jello, mix them all up in a small childs bath tub, cool the jello, take it out and let it stand so its not too cold, make sure you have a large plastic drop cloth on the floor, or outside as it is summer. Then set him down and let him go. You should let him be in just a diaper, So don't forget the sunscreen! You might be surprised at the fun he has!

Sometimes they are scared at first.  SO don't put him in it as it would be too cold, but allow him to do what ever he wants, even crawling into it, on his own. He should be just about walking now, he will soon be taking his first steps if he hasn't already!! YAAAY! Have alot of fun Neil! Be leary as some moms don't like the mess after, but supervised it is a wonderful experience for building sensory skills and memories. You can do tubs of rice cooked, cheereo's peeled grapes, but be careful for choking hazards at his age!
