Self-Aware Machines
« on: 15/02/2014 19:34:30 »
Shortly humans will construct machines that will become self-aware (conscious). Such machines will innevitably develope and follow their own motivations, goals and desires. For me this is an extreemly exiting prospect but I wonder how things may evolve after the arrival of this new race. ?

Nothing of interest will occur until a machine can seek out and manipulate the materials required to reproduce itself, or discovers means of having authority over other things. Consciousness is not a big deal (it isn't even defined) but viruses have been doing these things for zillions of years. The interesting prospect is the "designer virus", but alas all that has been achieved so far is (probably) some highly toxic military strains and (certainly) a few failed experiments in gene therapy.

The intelligent machines which are coming will have no desires whatsoever. They will not compete against us, but work for us. They may still wipe us out, but if they do so it will either be because of bad programming or people deliberately designing them to kill some people in favour of others (on the basis or race/religion/ideology).

Don't be worried: you'll hear them coming a mile off ...
