Purely hypothetical at the moment but could it be assumed the first visitors here would probably be some artificial intelligence just as anything we send further than the moon seems to be rovers etc?

In the extremely unlikely event of vehicles visiting us from an alien intelligence I cannot imagine they would remain unidentified for long they would have to carry communication equipment of considerable power to send back data to their home planet which would be quickly monitored by our deep space network.
the orientation of their antenna or lasers would give a clue as to from whence they came.
They could of course carry data recorders to be read out when they return but their controllers would need some indication that they had arrived.

I would have thought it would be worth including a biological element to convert any good planets into the right kind of places for the aliens who sent it to live on - they could use microbes to convert the atmosphere to a mix that will be more appealing to them when they arrive themselves. They might also have ways of creating their own species here by modifying the microbes repeatedly until they end up becoming identical to the intelligent aliens who sent them - it would be a matter of steering their "evolution" through direct genetic modification, taking a path calculated in advance which will ensure that the end result is the same species as the aliens back home, thereby eliminating the need for any living individuals to travel so that it doesn't matter if they don't end up anywhere habitable.

It depends on how close they get to Earth, and how big the ship is.

If they are broadcasting with EM spectrum (radio,microwave,light,X-Ray, or Gamma), one would presume they would be broadcasting with a highly directed beam back towards the home planet or a communication relay node.

If they inserted into an orbit around the sun near Ceres, then once every 5 years, for a couple of days the communication might shoot past Earth, depending on how tight the signal is...  if only we were listening on the correct frequency at the right time.  The rest of the time they could be broadcasting past Jupiter and Saturn and we'd never know.  We might see the craft with visible light, assuming it is constructed with a reflective surface and it was over 1km in length.  However, if it is less than 100 meters in length and built with the same stealth technology we use in our military equipment, it would be hard to spot.

Could the "Wow Signal" have been a ship that happened to have its signal cross past the earth with a very odd periodicity that might bring it into alignment once a century?

Assuming an originating life form similar to that on earth.  I think that it is highly likely tat any attempt at interstellar travel will be conducted using electronics and robotics because of its potentially much greater durability, simple environmental requirements and the ability to minimise its energy usage for very long periods.

It could be a mixture of biological and robotic. If they wanted to colonize the planet they would first observe at a safe distance sending out unmanned probes. Intelligence gathering would include assimilating knowledge of language and culture, including data on past history. If it was determined that a dialogue would be productive then first contact would then be debated. If hostilities are expected then two courses of action are open. The first to move on to other planets which could be costly and the second to plan a strategy of subterfuge to overcome resistance. This second option does not necessarily require warfare.

I don't think aliens wishing to take over another planet would be much concerned with the history and culture the present inhabitants they would either be enslaved or killed like it has happened on Earth when technologically advanced nations have advanced into new territories.
