The process of a “permanent” involves chemical treatment of the hair. The first stage is to apply a basic reduction substance (ammonium thioglycolate is often used). This process ruptures & breaks some of the disulphide cross-links between the keratin molecules that make up hair. The hair is then put on rollers or curlers. As the alpha-helices in the hair strands are bonded by disulphide links, separating into rollers means they are no longer lightly cross-linked to each other and they can shift positions in relocation to each other. An oxidising agent (usually a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide) referred to as the neutraliser is the applied. This reforms the disulphide bonds in the new positions and thus you have a perm.

The “permanent” treatment will hold the new disulphide bonds in position until the hair starts to grow out. New hair growth will not have received the treatment and therefore will not be curly & this will also make existing curls more relaxed.

Naturally curly hair is caused by the uneven distrubution of consolidating disulphide bridges. This can cause varying degrees of curling. Curly hair results from the disulphide bridges between methionine and cysteine, it is down to the gene the person has for keratin and how many of these amino acids it produces in the protein it codes for that causes naturally curly hair.

In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

Maybe just another cosmetic company trying to use scientific words to sell their product. I hate when they do that.

Karen...ignore all the rubbish pseudoscience above..!!

It is a well documented fact that the stuff used to make your hair into a perm is comprised of tiny tiny itsy bitsy magical springs so small that they can only be seen under a microscope.

They are gathered from the gardens of the hidden kingdom Bounceington on the planet Coil during the rainy season when the land is saturated with Hippoty-Hop rain ! from clouds filled with bed-springs made from fairy wings !

...and that's the truth !!

Honestly...I really wonder sometimes how some of the people get away with such trite ! ;)

Men are the same as women, just inside out !
