How fast does gravity travel?
« on: 18/03/2014 10:30:01 »
Kamil asked the Naked Scientists:
I have a question about gravity.

Let say there is some civilization that can teleport such big objects like our sun. Now what will happen if our sun is teleported immediately from our solar system? I know that we will see it for the next 8.30 minutes, but what will happen with the earth orbit? Will our planet move along its own orbit for next 8.30 minutes or will it drift away from the center of our solar system immediately?

In short, do hypothetical gravitons travel with the speed of light or gravity works immediately because of its nature?

Thank for a great great show!
Sorry for my poor English,
Kind regards,

Kamil from Poland
What do you think?

A gravitational wave moves at the speed of light as does any gravitational disturbance.
