Alan Guth, the theoretical physicist who predicted the "Inflation" of the Big Bang now says that he considers the driver for this earlier inflation to be an "Inflaton" field. This was driven by (or resulted in?) the separation of an earlier unified force into the four forces we know today.

He suggests that the current Dark Energy to be a similar type of force, but immensely weaker than the earlier period of inflation.
