Is my temporary?
« on: 23/08/2006 10:38:12 »
This is regarding my BP. I am 31 years old and work as a manager in an IT company. Recently, I recorded a BP of 175 / 116. My BP was quite normal a couple of months back, fluctuating between 120/85 to 140/90. Very recently I lost 2 people who were very close to me - My father and my fiancee. I am under too much stress currently. I am not sure whether the hypertenstion is chronic or temporary. My head seems heavy most of the times with short headaches from the past 3 weeks.I consulted the doctor and I am taking "Stamlo - 5mg" for the past 2 weeks. But still the BP recorded is between 140/93 - 147/100. Could you please advice me on this?

Are you taking a blood pressure diary?  Did your doctor have you do one before he prescribed medicine?

Your blood pressure should be monitored regularly if it is that high and how long have you been on the medicine?  If things have not leveled out, you will need to go back to your doctor in case this medication is not working for you...too many variables...but that blood pressure is too high

There is a BP phenomenon called "The White Coat Effect" which you should be aware of:-

ROBERT is a fantastic phenomenon also here !!....Robert !!....that is exactly what I have....this man has a way of pinpointing and fine tuning threads..it's actually quite unnerving !!

In MY case...because of my ' white coat effect (or as I know it White Coat Syndrome ') I was hooked up to a portable BP machine for 24 hours  and just carried on my life as normal at home and at work....the result..?...slightly elevated BP but far far less than every time it was recorded at the doctors or at a hospital !!!

Sudha39..I strongly urge you to request the same use of such a machine...it's not much bigger than a portable CD Player.....

If Sudha39 is considering monitoring her BP at home, then I strongly suggest that she uses a device with a cuff which is designed to go around the upper arm, as the devices which fit around the wrist or finger are less accurate:-

" Recommendation: 1) Arm-cuff devices based on the cuff-oscillometric method that have been validated officially, and the accuracy of which has been confirmed in each individual, should be used for home BP measurement. 2) The BP should be measured at the upper arm. Finger-cuff devices and wrist-cuff devices should not be used for home BP measurements."
