Why is it that we can no longer say " one nation under God" in school, but the words "In God we trust" can remain on our money????

they cant. the same organizations that petitioned for the pledge to be changed are tryign to change the money.

i think its great. id also personally like to get the presidents and real people off bills and coins. they only started being on the money in this past century, before that it was considered rediculous for a president to expect the treatment of a king. and it is.

really does not matter to me personally as long as it spends, i was just curious why the word "god" can be on money and yet not said or refered to in the national anthem....i agreed with gecko about presidents being treated like kings being rediculous.

Hi K - I will continue to say "one nation under God", will continue to "In God I trust".  And I will continue to say Merry CHRISTmas instead of Happy Holidays.:)

The British national anthem also refers to God (God save the Queen ...), but few people actually take note of it, and the anthem itself does not have the same meaning to the average Brit as the national anthem of the USA has to the average American.

In fact, most Brits are probably more moved by some of the traditional 'unofficial anthems' that are traditionally played on the Last Night of the Proms (although one of them too started out life as a hymn).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/celtic/5287664.stm
quote:

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc has been cautioned for a breach of the peace by police for blessing himself in an Old Firm match at Ibrox in February.
The Crown Office said the procurator fiscal had issued the caution as an alternative to prosecution.
A spokesman explained that Boruc's actions "included a combination of behaviour before a crowd in the charged atmosphere of an Old Firm match".
And that the Polish keeper's behaviour had "provoked alarm and crowd trouble".
The incident was said to have taken place at the start of the second half of the game on 12 February.
Police investigated the complaints and submitted a report to the procurator fiscal.
The Crown Office said Boruc's behaviour had taken place before a crowd in the charged atmosphere of a match between Celtic and rivals Rangers.
As such it constituted a breach of the peace.
However, it is understood that as an alternative to prosecution, the Pole has been cautioned, leaving him with a criminal record.
The goalkeeper, who played during this year's World Cup in Germany, signed for Celtic from Legia Warsaw in July last year.
Peter Kearney, spokesman for the Catholic Church, said the move to caution Boruc was "regrettable".
He said: "It's a worrying and alarming development, especially since the sign of the cross is globally accepted as a gesture of religious reverence.
"It's also very common in international football and was commonplace throughout the World Cup.
"It is extremely regrettable that Scotland seems to have made itself one of the few countries in the world where this simply religious gesture is considered an offence."

in reply to whoever asked, instead of presidents(or benjamin franklin) on our money, we could have many national symbols or events. countless things. the bald eagle, the signing of the delcaration, poisoning the indians with our "gifts" and wiping out half their population, calvin taking a leak on the british flag, etcetera.

or maybe we could just put the amount on it... and maybe a fun joke on the other side like a popsicle stick!

I will also say Merry Christmas, because that is what the holiday is (and I won't even think too much about that most of the days we call holidays are not actually holy at all technically, having a holiday to celebrate Martin Luther King, or the American Independence day, could be technically argued to be blasphemy, since none of those are at all religious events).

To argue that Bush personally has forbidden God's name from being mentioned in schools is incorrect, since (although I am not totally familiar with the background of all of this) it comes down to Supreme Court judgements, and is outside the scope of the President's personal authority.

As I understand it, the reason that God is not allowed to be taught in schools is not because America was ever an atheist country, but rather because there were many different religious groups within America (America being often the place that religious minorities fled when their particular view of religion clashed with the majority view at home), so the founding father's decided that the only way that no particular religious minority should be disadvantaged was to remove all mention of religion from any State institution, and allow each person to take their own view on God.  What the founding father's were afraid of was that schools (or courts, or other institutions) would propagate one view of God at the expense of others.  Hence these institutions are not allowed to promulgate any view of God (that does not mean that they must be anti-God, only that they are not allowed to take any view on God, one way or the other).

I wish they'd put Richard Feynman on the $100 bill instead of U.S. Grant.  Grant was one of the worst presidents in history, anyway.

Only if you accept the convention that the northern hemisphere should be uppermost.

On a similar point, assuming there is a god who permiates all space and time, 'under god' would be correct, but 'engulfed by god' or 'swallowed by god' would be more accurate.

Or if pollution continues, it may be 'one nation, under smog'
