Why would UFOs show any light at all?

Looking up at the night sky the only thing you see are the lights in the sky.  If an alien craft wanted to stay hidden, it could merely go dark and 95 percent of us would never even notice its passage.  Any UFO displaying lights is probably man made and not alien.

Most sightings of UFOs come at night, why? Presumably to stay hidden from view.  Why expose your craft to daytime detailed inspection, by this then why show a light if it give away your alieness by your strange behaviors?  If UFO propulsion had a side effect of producing light that would give away their position, then it would be safer to fly during the day, for the light then becomes less noticeable.  Now one could argue they display lights so that earth craft do not run into them when they fly at night, but this indicates a choice to that it is necessary to fly at night and a realization of the threat of undetectable earth machines.  This logic however indicates a lack of sophistication that which we attribute to aliens capable of interplanetary travel.  The only plausible explanation for UFOs to fly at night with lights on would be to mimic earthy flying objects, strange antics in the sky however even defeat this explanation.  Why exhibit any other flight envelope than that of the common straight line flight path of the common jet airliner?  A craft exhibiting light emanation closer to the ground could be a side effect of the craft's propulsion system with the objects in the environment and/or for practical visual navigation purposes so they don't run into objects.  Lights in the night sky can only be intended for navigational avoidance or to intentionally mislead the public into believing what they see is some alien craft.  Notice I say intended purpose at the last, for there are natural phenomena that cause lights in the night sky, lightning, meteors, comets etc. Though the lights in the sky exhibit strange behaviors if not the analog of natural cause I have to assume it is human intent. If Alien intent to demonstrate their presence, certain to cause concern, fear, or outright terror they could more readily achieve this by actively flaunting their presence to a wider range of witnesses than just the handful of stargazers.

It is actually very difficult to spot small aircraft flying irregular patterns in daylight. Unless their presence is announced by noise, people rarely look upwards anyway and air-to-air horizontal visibility is generally worse than ground-to-air. Airliners make things easier by travelling in straight lines and leaving contrails, but gliders and military jets are particularly difficult to spot - in the latter case intentionally!

So it's quite possible that the density of alien invaders is constant. Those that are spotted during daylight tend to be reported as "metallic" and thus no more conspicuous than a metal glider or a metallised weather balloon, with which they are often confused. But the glow of the antigravity plasma reactor is more conspicuous at night.

There being no evidence of intelligent life on earth, there is no intention to cause concern, fear or whatever. They are just idle tourists, no more bothered about advertising their presence than the average scuba diver. There are two kinds of fish: a few that have seen a human, and a vast majority that don't believe in humans.
