Does fracking cause earthquakes?
« on: 14/07/2014 01:25:01 »
There are reports from Oklahoma that earthquakes have occurred 50% more since fracking has increased in that state. is there definite correlation between this procedure and earth movements? Our government in British Columbia is pushing forward with an ambitious LNG policy that involves a lot of fracking and I live in an earthquake zone. Should I be worried?

There is a pretty solid correlation, but that alone does not imply causation by any means. From the little i know on the subject, I think it is possible or even likely that the fracking is at least partially to blame for the increase in geological activity, but as far as I know there is no "smoking gun."

To my knowledge, no increase in earthquake activity has been positively associated with "fracking" rocks.  That being said, it appears likely that injection of the wastewater from fracking in deep wells may be correlative.  Keep in mind that drilling and fracking for oil is not the same thing as deep wastewater injection.
