Can the alien grays hear our thoughts?
« on: 01/08/2014 18:36:02 »
If one accepts the idea that an alien race is on our planet and communicates via telepathy, then could a strong human telepath inversely tap into their information exchanges? An advanced alien species would discount our ability to interfere, perhaps allowing a human telepath to locate the alien and monitor their actions.  Could a human telepath's efforts be hidden, or would an alien be aware of the effort?

We are aware of your puny attempts to intercept our communications. We sometimes use directed jamming (which you perceive as "headaches") but mostly rely on your psychiatrists - our Fifth Column - to medicate or institutionalise those who attempt to rebroadcast our thoughts.

It's impossible to answer questions like that because what we know comes from observation and experiment and since these things don't really exist we can't observe anything about them and can't answer any question about them. It's like asking what the IQ of a unicorn is.

So on the hypothetical that telepathy does exist what is the range? If it is a metaphysical phenomena then is the range is infinite? If it is a physical phenomena then the range is limited, but by what distance? If the distance is infinite or more than direct physical proximity then the telepath would have a filtering problem, as they try to isolate the single persons thoughts from that of everyone else's.  How would any telepath achieve the focus needed to read one person's thoughts unless there was complete isolation from anyone else's thoughts?  In the thought matrix of their brain, too, the telepath needs to isolate, or "feel" the thoughts have come from another person rather than through self-generation, there is a chance for interference from self and others. Is the thought transference exact concepts, concrete spoken representations of ideas, or is the exchange merely of impressions, or emotions concerning a topic? Does there need to be common context for transference of meaning? In normal conversation for transference of ideas the persons need to be in a common frame of reference, else the significance of the words is lost or jumbled.  Do telepaths need thought resonance, or can they feel the context?

Your prescience into other matters has always made me suspect you, alancalverd.  And I thought everyone knew the Unicorn's IQ.  ;)

I just explained above that such questions can't be answered. The reason is that if such things can happen then it's also conceivable that it can happen in various ways using various mechanisms. Suppose telepathy worked like a radio in that someone's mind radiates their thoughts using electromagnetic waves and the reader picks up those thoughts with their minds. Then telepathy would have a range just like a radio has a range. We can't tell what the range is because there are also many different ways strengths the range may be. In one reality the mind of the person generating the thought could generate it with a  strength that depends on the person and the mind of the person receiving it might be more or less sensitive to the thought's strength. It's like asking how far can a person's voice carry and how sensitive someone's hearing is. Or it could work in a totally different way. Perhaps the minds of people are entangled just like particles can become entangled in quantum mechanics. Then there's an infinite range.

Some things cannot be described by physics like love, admiration and hatred which are emotions. Also imagination is difficult to describe and whilst important to physics imagination can run away with us.
