No need for external fields and such complications. If the box is in uniform motion, there is no effect on he path of the photons. However if it is accelerating, the photon path will change. This is the underlying principle of the ring laser gyroscope, and the reason they lock the toilet doors on aircraft just before takeoff and landing: it is impossible to pee straight during a manouever.

Accelerations are an exception that would give our inside observer a blue respective red shift, depending on his location in the box, relative the light. Also he would define it as following a curved path perpendicularly. It's a very weird thing accelerations :)
