Why are dental implants so expensive?
« on: 16/10/2014 16:25:09 »
I had a tooth pulled a few weeks ago. It was a back molar, and it doesn't show, and I can chew without it. Never the less it was my second one so far, and I asked my dentist about dental implants. They are $4-6,000 a piece.

Is it the actual implant itself, or the procedure that is so costly, and why? Will 3-D printing ever be able to create artificial teeth?

I was also asked my dentist why dentistry isnt covered by national health insurance, why we have this 19th century view that teeth are somehow a cosmetic luxury item, not really a necessary part of the body, even though studies are showing connections between tooth decay and inflammatory processes like heart disease.

She it will probably never be covered because it would cost the system too much, especially since people are retaining their teeth longer into old age.

Actually though, dentistry seems very cost efficient. My dentist can almost always quickly figure out what's wrong, what needs to be done with nothing more than a tiny x-ray. You don't have months of repeated doctors visits and extensive testing until a diagnosis is reached, and referrals to specialists. Everything is handled on site usually. What's more it's not likely to be an abused benefit. People rarely go to the dentist because they're bored or lonely or a hypochondriac.

It must be the act of fitting it that's costly. Perhaps having it done in combination with a holiday in India would be worth looking at.

I did manage to find a few articles about 3d printing or carving of teeth.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/08/a-new-tooth-made-to-order-in-under-an-hour/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

But it probably won't be feasible or common place for a while.

The price for dental implants varies from place to place and also with the type of material that you want to use. In the US price for dental procedures seems high compared to other countries like India and Mexico. Usually these are the top countries where people go to to have their medical including dental treatments done.

Here's a page I found online showing you the price for dental implants per country. You would really see some difference. newbielink:http://www.placidway.com/cost-sub-treatment-searchlist/Dentistry,Dental_Implants/ [nonactive]

It is cheaper to retain the shell of your existing tooth and its existing root system, if it is in good shape. This is done with root canal therapy, followed by building a crown on the stump of the tooth.
I had this done recently, and it was partially covered by my health plan (in Australia).

Keeping good care of your teeth also contributes to your physiology health. You should brush everyday twice with your fluoride toothpaste. Clear the spaces everyday between your teeth with a floss. Take care of your gum health.

The Hungarian dental implant industry(? service?) has an excellent reputation for cost and quality but you will have to hurry - they are exporting dentists and nurses to the UK and Ireland as fast as they can train them!

You canít expect quality for implants then. On one hand everyone wants quality and then donít want to pay for that. My cousin works with a newbielink:http://newsmilesdentistry.com/ [nonactive] and he often tells me same complaints client make there too.
