PC HELP !
« on: 11/09/2006 04:37:49 »
Can a suite of net security tools dramatically slow down the download speed of a broadband connection ? (from 4-5mb to 1.5-2mb)

Can it also be the reason that when creating an email in Outlook Express , that when editing an email, *specifically when pushing the DELETE button to remove text from the right side of the cursor*..that it can slow it down so that even the scrolling towards the cursor just happens in ' jumps ' and only  after releasing the button ?....It is sooooooooooooo annoying !!!!!!

Sorry...worded the above terribly...hope you know what I mean.. :)

THANK YOU anyone and everyone.

Cannot see why the edit function in outlook should directly be effected, excepting if you are doing some other activity in the background at the same time.

Security systems, in particular, virus protection software, can be a drain on system resources (depending on how the software is configured), since it is likely to intercept all incoming email and downloads in order that it verify it free of viruses.  There can also be quite dramatic differences in the performance of different anti-virus software.

Thanks George,

The reason why I ask is that I have just recently transferred to a higher speed line. The first week I was obtaining a stable download speed of 5mbs....Now....after the first week I am averaging about 1.5mb and no faster  !!...This is slower than when my subscription was only for a 2mb line !!

I recently installed Norton..but I have to say..I do not think it is the Norton...I suppose I could uninstall it but it's acting as if it is capped at that speed.

Very frustrating  !!

At our old place we had a 8mb connection, but because there was a fault with the line it was like 1mb. We were pissed off because we were paying for a service that we were not recieving. It's strange how there was nothing wrong with the line until we had payed them.

I doubt its norton but you can turn off it off rather than uninstalling to see if its restricting you. It may be the distance you are from the exchange or due to your isp signing up to many people.

Try doing a internet based "broadband speed test"with norton turned on and then off ,

Their are many speed tests on the net if you google it.

Could it be that you e-mail is overloaded with graphics. I'd hate this to be the case(!) but it can slow things down :(:(:(

Thanks Michael...Yes, I am regularly testing the speed of connection.... I use this one all the time http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ plus I check the results with Uk based speed tests too...results are the same...s l o w  !    I have also tried disabling Norton, that's why I don't think it is because there's no change.

I do not understand why it seems to be capped at 2mb when in the first week I was achieving much higher speeds...It is in fact an 8mb subscription and according to tests, my line is capable of up to 6.5mbs.

Gaia...Thank you...No, my emails are not image laden...apart from the odd smiley or two !  I also use a few web based emails and they are fine...it's just outlook express.

oh well...perhaps I'll eventually get some support from my provider. They are just crap at support...just getting through to someone is a trauma in itself !!!..  just like most organisations.

THANKS EVERYONE.

It could be line noise, or simply some stability issue with the upgrade.

I was upgraded from 2Mbs to 8Mbs in late August, and the line has been unstable ever since.  I am trying to persuade Demon to downgrade me back to 2Mbs - better slow but stable, than fast but unstable.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the actuall average speed you are obtaining may be much less than the line speed - depending on how heavily the line is used by other people.  Are you actually seeing true line speed, or average download times.  Most ADSL lines have a contention ratio of upto 50, which means that in the worst case, your line speed could be divided amongst 50 different users, and you only get a 1/50th share of the line (in reality, any respectable ISP will not allow the situation to regularly degrade to anything like that level, but it is a worst case scenario).

George, it seems we are both experiencing a similar situation.

I have considered line noise.

I have two telephone lines here. My original connection was via a single line in my office with just one phone attached it to it. That was a 2mb connection and was stable.

The transfer to my other line, also in my office, is shared with three other phones around the home.

Could it be something to do with the fact that I do not have microfilters connected to all the extension boxes ?.....but the question still remains as to why in the first week was I achieving at least double what I am achieving now !

Good luck with your downgrade.

Now, my faster line i

Neil, might be worth running a cleanup on your hard drive, just in case.

To run a VERY thorough clean-up of your hardrive visit www.hitmanpro.nl

It runs many anti-spyware/adware/virus/trojan/worm etc programmes all in one go. Be warned, it takes a long time but is very very thorough!!! It's updated regularly and isn't commercial.

It's a Dutch site but if you scroll down you'll come to the English language text. I've used it several times and am very impressed.

If you're running a firewall you may need to babysit for a while, to grant permissions for the programmes to run.

Repeated warning - it takes a long time to run because it runs quite a few programmes.
