kerry  asked the Naked Scientists:

With the plastic 2 liter soft drink bottles is it better to squeeze as much air out before putting the lid back on to preserve the gas in the drink or just put the lid on as is? Either way the bottle is always bloated the next time you pour some out, so which is best to reduce the loss of gas from the drink?

Can't always catch your show on 702 but great work anyway
Kind Regards Kerry

What do you think?

I don't think there is any difference between squeezing the bottle before resealing it or not.

3 suggestions:

1) Buy single-serving cans or bottles for yourself, and save the 2-liter bottles for parties, knowing that any unfinished bottles will go flat.

2) Fill the headspace of the partially empty bottle with carbon dioxide (ideally presurized).

3) Buy a soda fountain.

There's a pump-gadget to inflate the bottle with air to keep the drink fizzy ...

If you squeeze the bottle before capping it, you reduce the pressure above the liquid and provide a little more space for gas coming out of solution, so that's not a good choice. Increasing the pressure in the bottle is the way to go.

Add a teaspoon of vinegar and a teaspoon of baking soda, then seal  :)

Ummm...  practice outside before trying it inside the house, wear safety goggles, and stand back...  just in case you get too much CO2.

Drop in a tiny bit of Dry Ice just before screwing on the cap!
Not too much, or it will become a self-opening bottle...

If you opt for the dry ice route, try to get the food-grade stuff--the technical-grade dry ice is full of all sorts of crap. Probably nothing that would kill you, but why put dirt in your beverage if it can be avoided?
